What to expect at your first visit?
We would like to thank you for choosing Bishop and Gililland Orthodontics. This packet has been designed especially for you to help get a better understanding of what will take place at your consultation appointment. We are very excited about meeting you and look forward to helping each patient get a better understanding of what orthodontics can do for them!

• The first visit is a consultation visit lasting approximately 60 to 90 minutes. It is designed to give you a thorough understanding of what to expect with braces, how long treatment will last if needed, and how much it will cost.

• Most consultation visits are free of charge. If the doctors need additional diagnostic information there will be a charge of $75.00, but only in complicated instances is this necessary.

• When you arrive for your visit you will be greeted by our receptionist who will then introduce you to the New Patient Coordinator. This will be the person who you will spend the majority of the appointment with. She is there to answer almost any question you may have and help refer to the doctor your needs and concerns. Depending upon which office you come to these are the New Patient Coordinators you will look for:

Jan Chisholm

Sallie Kate Champion

Debra Weems

• Upon arrival please present the Yellow Information Card along with your Insurance card (if available) to either the receptionist or new patient coordinator. If possible, please fax or e-mail a copy of your insurance card or information a few days before the consultation visit so that we can verify your benefits and better help you to understand the insurance company’s part of the fee.

  • Fax: Tupelo: 662-842-6679
  • Fax: Oxford: 662-234-9032
  • Fax: Southaven: 662-893-9023
  • E-mail: debra@watt-a-smile.com

• Next, you will be taken on a tour of the office to see:

  • where the braces are put on and adjusted
  • state of the art sterilization room
  • photography and radiography studio
  • consultation area
  • along the way the rest rooms, tooth brush stations, reward and toy closet (a must see) will be pointed out for your convenience.

• The next step is to take records. These are the diagnostic tools, along with an examination by the doctor that will be needed to determine the type, length and cost of treatment. Records consist of Digital photographs, Digital X-rays (2 types) and Models when needed.

Step 1- Digital Photographs
A series of 8 pictures will be taken using cheek retractors and mirrors. These pictures will then be printed out for you to take home! Taking pictures with cheek retractors looks something like you see below:

When all the photos have been taken they will look something like you see below:

Step 2: Dental Radiographs (X-Rays)
2 different X-rays are needed for the doctors to assess the overall health of the teeth, bones and joints. They will help in diagnosing any missing or impacted teeth, potentially troubling areas (like wisdom teeth or bone loss), along with the relative amount of growth remaining for that individual and severity of the problem. The X-ray’s that we take are digital to better reduce the amount of radiation exposure. If you have a copy of one from your dentist or orthodontist feel free to bring that along so that we can add it to your chart. Taking X-rays looks something like you see below:

The final x-rays look like this:

Step 3: (If needed)
The final step is to take impressions (or molds) of your mouth so that the doctors can have a better appreciation or understanding of what the problem is and how to best treat it. This is normally done at the following visit once and if you decide to have braces and only if the doctor feels it is needed. Impressions of your mouth look something like this:

• Once all the records are taken you will then sit down with the new patient coordinator and look them over. She will spend however much or little time it takes listening to your needs and concerns so that the doctor has a better understanding of how we can help you.
• She will introduce you to the various types of braces available today which include all that you see below:

(Colors are always available to change at every visit!)
• Once you have been fully informed either Dr. Bishop or Dr. Gililland will sit down with you and discuss the specifics of your treatment ranging from how long, how much, and when to start. To learn more about our doctors see the enclosed biography of each!

• Finally, the new patient coordinator will review the fee and help coordinate a payment schedule that is suitable to your budget. We have many different payment plans including some with no down payment to help tailor a plan you are comfortable with! We know how important this part is so please take the time to ask plenty of questions!

• If the doctor says the time is right to start and you are ready the final step is for the new patient coordinator to schedule your appointment to get your braces! On some occasions we can even put the braces on the SAME DAY- if this interests you please let us know ahead of time so that we can reserve your slot! This greatly helps reduce the amount of school and work missed!
